Gâlcescu Lake – The Glacial Reserve of the Parâng Mountains

About 35 km from ZAN Hotel lies Gâlcescu Lake (also known as Câlcescu), considered the largest and most impressive glacial lake in the Parâng Mountains. Situated at an altitude of 1,925 m, the lake covers an area of about 3.2 hectares and reaches a depth of nearly 10 meters. Set in a perfectly shaped glacial cirque, the lake is surrounded by moraines, scree slopes, and rocky walls carved during the last major glacial period, creating a mountain landscape of remarkable beauty.

The Gâlcescu Lake area has been declared a natural reserve since 1932, with geological, botanical, and landscape protection status. Here you can find rare glacial relic plants specific to pure alpine ecosystems, as well as mosses and arctic-alpine species that are difficult to encounter elsewhere in the Carpathians. In addition to its special flora, the reserve also hosts rich mountain wildlife, with chamois, marmots, and occasionally even lynx or brown bears observed in more remote areas.

One of the important sources of the Lotru River originates from this glacial cirque, giving the area significant hydrological importance and contributing to the formation of the valley’s mountain landscapes.

Obârșia Lotrului – Gâlcescu Lake Trail

The most common route to the lake starts from Obârșia Lotrului, just a short drive from the hotel. The hike follows the red cross trail marking, is approximately 13.8 km long, and usually takes 5–6 hours. With an elevation gain of over 1,000 meters, the route is considered moderate to challenging, suitable for hikers with good physical condition.

The trail begins through a conifer forest, continues through subalpine areas with dense dwarf pine, and as the altitude increases, the landscape becomes more spectacular, opening toward steep slopes, glacial cirques, and rocky cliffs. The final section crosses unstable scree slopes and moraines, where trail markings can be less frequent in places, requiring attention and proper equipment. Shorter routes of 3–4 hours also exist, but they are steeper and recommended mainly for experienced hikers.

Why Gâlcescu Lake Is Worth Visiting

Gâlcescu Lake is one of the most beautiful glacial lakes in the Carpathians, offering impressive panoramas over the Parâng mountain ridge and the surrounding glacial cirque. The area is ideal for authentic hiking, nature photography, geological study, or simply enjoying the quiet atmosphere of the mountains.

From here, several trails lead toward Piatra Tăiată Saddle, Parângul Mare Peak, or other glacial lakes in the Gâlcescu glacial complex. Experienced hikers may also choose to camp in accordance with the regulations of the protected area.

Recommendations for Visitors

Proper mountain equipment — good hiking boots, trekking poles, a trail map, and a rain jacket — is essential. Starting early in the morning is recommended to maintain a comfortable and safe pace. In areas where markings are rare or terrain becomes more difficult, a mountain guide can be helpful.

A visit to Gâlcescu Lake is more than just a hike; it is a direct encounter with one of the most authentic glacial landscapes in the Carpathians. Its perfectly sculpted cirque, rare flora, and the feeling of high-altitude wilderness create a memorable moment for any mountain lover.
